Retro Gamer Issue 74

Well as you can see from the cover shot I took with my iPhone I have managed to scrimp and save to get the latest issue of Retro Gamer.

As you can see from the cover the main story providing the inspiration for the cover is the article on Ghosts ‘n Goblins. I never did really play the game in the arcades. Well living in Wisbech an arcade visit either meant going to the coast to Hunstanton or waiting for the fair to come to town. So the first time I played this game was the rather excellent port to the Commodore 64. If my memory doesn’t fail me I bought this on floppy disk.

In the news section they talk about two retro compilations for the Nintendo DS that I wouldn’t mind getting. The first is Sonic Classic Collection followed by the Capcom Mega Man Zero Collection.

They cover the making of Spy vs Spy by First Software based on the Mad Magazine characters. I never got into this game, it was a game my best friend Kevin Odgen was really into. I played two player with Kevin sometimes but as all ways happens the noob at the game gets beaten easily by the person that has played it to death.

There is also a major article on the history of joysticks and game controllers. I’ve got a post inspired by this coming up soon.

They also look at the making of Tapper, another game I first played on the Commodore 64.

The magazine gets in the chair with David Braben, co-creator of Elite. Which I would hope readers of this blog will know one of the all time great computer games. Which I first came across on the BBC Micro at the local college of further education. But then seriously played when it came out on the Commodore 64. When Braben dies it will be on his headstone that he co-created Elite. No matter what else he achieves with his life.

Also they have released an iPhone app for the magazine. From within the app you can subscribe for 6 or 12 months, or buy the current issue for £1.29 or get back issues for £2.99. The app is £1.29 and comes with a free issue of the magazine! I’m impressed with this offering.

That for me is all of the interesting stuff from the magazine this month. Would love to hear from you if you have read it already or once you have got the issue what you thought, what was of interest to you.
